With the Embark persistence assessment training, you will receive a complete introduction to chemical (bio)degradation and persistence assessments in a regulatory context. This is designed to give you all the information you need to move forward with persistence assessments with confidence and clarity.
The course will focus on persistence assessments according to European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) guidance, which is applicable to the assessment of industrial chemicals, biocides and pharmaceuticals in the European Economic Area (EEA). However, persistence assessment of plant protection products, and under other regulatory regimes, will also be addressed. Common challenges with persistence assessments, including working with difficult substances and substances with complex compositions, will also be discussed.
You will learn about persistence from someone who has been regularly practicing these assessments for over 15 years. You will benefit from all of their past experiences and know-how. The course includes hands-on experience working with the Persistence Assessment Tool, and a quiz after each section to cement your learning. There will also be plenty of opportunity for Q&A and discussion with the speaker.

About the speaker, Chris Hughes
Chris is an environmental scientist and regulatory expert with over 15 years’ experience. As founder of Embark Chemical Consulting, Chris specialises in providing scientific and regulatory support in chemical hazard and risk assessment for customers across industry, regulatory bodies and academia.
Chris is a leading expert in biodegradation and persistence assessment of chemicals. He led the development of the Persistence Assessment Tool (PAT), a software designed to support regulatory persistence assessments, sponsored by the chemicals, refining and cosmetics sectors. He was also the founding chair of the Persistence Science Interest Group at the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC).
Prior to establishing Embark in 2024, Chris was an Associate Director and lead for environmental chemistry and toxicology services at Ricardo Plc. Before that Chris worked at Shell on the implementation of REACH and CLP, specialising in biodegradation testing and PBT/vPvB assessment for a range of products.
Chris has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on the topic of persistence, and regularly chairs sessions and gives presentations at SETAC conferences. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and a member of the UK REACH Independent Scientific Expert Pool.
